Public transportation
Public transportation in Debrecen is provided by DKV (short for Debreceni Közlekedési Vállalat – Public Transport Company of Debrecen). 2 tram, 5 trolleybus and 51 bus routes and scheduled services are available.
You need to buy tickets or passes to use the public transportation system. You can get your pass online with Mobile ticket app before you arrive. Bus tickets can also be bought from other sales locations here. Check the details and prices here.
Single tickets are valid for a single uninterrupted trip without transfer. When you get on the vehicle, please make sure that your ticket is validated, as passengers are not entitled to use the vehicle without ticket validation.
The best and most comfortable way to use public transportation is to buy a monthly pass, available at a discounted price with your student card (you can apply for one upon registration) at post offices and the main building of the University. The monthly pass is only valid together with your student card and with the student card number written on it.
For more information, please visit the DKV website.

Biking requirements
Wearing a helmet is not compulsory in Hungary, but we always recommend it. Good bike lights are absolutely essential – both high light power and flashing lights are allowed. A high-quality light is obligatory for all cyclists. On the basis of the national Highway Code, the following equipment list is absolutely essential and required from all cyclists:
• an easy-to-use handlebar
• a bell
• two brakes which are independent from each other, and which are reliable even in severe weather conditions
• a white or amber front light
• a red rear light, a side lamp that can be seen from a distance of at least 150 meters
• at least one red rear and one white front triangular retro-reflector
• at least two spoke reflectors on the front wheel
• a reflective waistcoat, which helps other road users to see you in poor light, or when riding on a road outside city limits.
In the last few years, many bike trails have been built along pavements so cycling is safe and comfortable in the city.
Bike shops and Rent-a-bike services are available and you may also find several services where you can repair your bicycle.
You can find more information about bike rent/shops/services/ and cycling itineraries in the greater Debrecen area here.
UniBike is one of them. The UniBike bicycle sharing system was established by the University of Debrecen and the Debrecen Reformed Theological University. The purpose of the Unibike system is to enable students and employees of the universities to move freely between campuses.
